For others, we have at least a temporary workaround until Microsoft provides a fix. Click on the button that says Email Accounts to view your accounts. Select your Outlook email account from the list and click on Change. On the following screen, under the Logon Information section, you’ll see an option saying Remember password. Tick-mark the option so it is enabled and click on Next to save the changes.

The main issue is with the MS Exchange settings, the Logon network security setting is different from what is required. The settings in the security tab should be set to Anonymous Authentication. This problem mainly occurs in an earlier version of Outlook other than 2016 and 2013. There are many other reasons which lead to Outlook asking for password again and again a few of them are as follow:

1. Steps to Change Outlook Security settings are given below:

  • Close Outlook application and go to Control Panel
  • Look for Mail Icon and double click on it
  • Click on Show profile option and select your Outlook Profile
  • Click on Properties and then E-mail Accounts>>Change
  • The Change Account dialog box will open, go to More Settings option
  • The Microsoft Exchange Dialog box will open Move to Security tab
  • In the Login network security list, select the Anonymous Authenticationoption and then click OK.
  • Finally, Click on Finishand Close the dialog boxes.
  • Now Restart Outlook

The problem will be resolved and you can work without the Outlook Password prompt.

2. Disable Outlook Password Prompt For Each Log In

If the user has enabled User Identification settings for Outlook, it will keep asking for a password. So, disable these settings and work in Outlook without interruptions

  • Open Outlook and sign in to your account
  • Now click on File and then Account Settings and then again Account Settings
  • Select the Exchange account and click on ‘Change Button’
  • Click on More Settings button and a new box will open, Now click on the Security tab
  • Go to User Identification and uncheck ‘Always prompt for logon credentials.’
  • Click OK to save changes

3. Remove Outlook Login Details from Credential Manager

  • Remove the previously stored or old Outlook credentials by following steps
  • Go to Start and click on Control Panel
  • From Control Panel find the Credential Manager
  • The list of applications with credential sets will open, click on the Outlook sets
  • Expand the menu and click Remove from the vault
  • Do the same with Credential sets having Outlook in the name.

4. Corrupt Outlook Profile

When Outlook profile is corrupt then also the Outlook password prompt error may arise, So to resolve the error you can create a new profile in Outlook.

  1. Open Outlook, Now select File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles

  2. Click on Show Profiles > Add

  3. Now in the Profile Name box, type a name for the profile, and then choose OK.

Why is Mail asking for your password?

Mail asks for your password when it is connecting to your email provider, but can't connect to your email account because your email provider isn't accepting your email password.

Your email provider may reject your password for several reasons, including:

  • You're not using your current email password. If you updated the password on another device, make sure that you're using the same password on your Mac.
  • Your email provider needs you to update or reset your password for security reasons. For example, if you're using Google’s two-step verification, your Gmail account in Mail requires the appropriate app-specific password.
  • Your email provider deactivated or suspended your account. Contact your email provider for help.

Check your password in Internet Accounts preferences

Depending on the type of email account you're using, you might be able to correct the password as follows:

  1. Quit Mail. If it doesn't quit, you can force it to quit.
  2. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Internet Accounts.
  3. Select your mail account in the sidebar.
  4. If you see a password field for your account, delete the password and type the correct password.
  5. Close System Preferences, then open Mail and try using your account again.

If Mail still asks for your password, the password is probably incorrect. Your email provider can help you verify your email settings and make sure that you're using the correct password.

Test using webmail

Many email providers offer webmail, which is a way to use email with a web browser such as Safari, instead of with an email app such as Mail. For example, if you're using an iCloud Mail account, you can use iCloud.com to send and receive email.

Because the password that you use with Mail is usually the same password that you use with webmail, try signing in to webmail with that password. If it doesn't work there either, your password is probably incorrect. Your email provider can help you verify your email settings and make sure that you're using the correct password for the Mail app.

Remove your account, then add it back

If no other solutions work, try setting up your email account again. To do that, first remove your email account, then add the account back.
