In 1932, Hollywood film producer Howard Hughes founded the Hughes Aircraft Company, which manufactured and tested extravagant aircraft created by Hughes himself.

In 1937, Hughes made a transcontinental flight, and in 1938 - set a world record, flying around the Earth in three days 19 hours 14 minutes.

Hughes Aircraft Co. developed the first models of helicopters: the unique for its time flying crangigan XH-17 'Sky Crane' (1952), as well as the unique Hughes XH-28 (1954-55), which used the system of rotation of the propeller by air injected into the blades.

Later, such a system of rotation of the propeller blades was developed in the model Hughes XV-9, which in 1960 was named Hughes 385.

In 1955-60, the main production was completely reoriented to the production of the most popular models of light helicopters - Hughes 269, 300.

In 1983, the Hughes 300 was sold to Schweizer Aircraft and is still available as the Schweizer 300.

Several years after the successful launch of the Hughes 269, 300 series (TH-55 Osage for the US Air Force), during the peak production period, when more than 1,000 such helicopters were produced per year, the Hughes model line was supplemented by the Hughes 369 (MD 500 C) - in civilian modification, and modifications OH-6 Cayuse - for the US Air Force, also known as 'Little Bird' since their active use in the Vietnam War and released today in new military modifications by Boeing.

Later, the model range was supplemented by a particularly successful model of the attack helicopter AH-64 Apache, various modifications of which are currently made by Boeing.

In 1984, Hughes sold its McDonnell Douglas civilian helicopter division, which continued Hughes' tradition by developing with Boeing in 1989 the most advanced, yet unparalleled, segment.
