To celebrate Star Wars Day, the NPD Group revealed the top-ten best-selling Star Wars games in the US, and there are some surprising results.
EA and DICE’s resurrection of the Battlefront franchise remains the best-selling Star Wars game. Star Wars Battlefront (2015), despite garnering mixed reviews, arrived at the right time. It had been nearly five years since a non-Kinect Star Was game was released (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II), and the hype for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was off the charts. EA’s other two Star Wars titles, Jedi: Fallen Order and Battlefront II (2017) rounded off the Top 3. Despite EA’s controversial handling of the license, their titles ended up selling really well.
That’s not to say pre-Disney Star Wars games sold poorly. Three of the four LEGO Star Wars games ended up in the Top 10, as did the original Star Wars: Battlefront titles. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, LucasArts last major attempt to get a new Star Wars IP off the ground, also remains a top-seller. However, its sequel did not.
Notably absent from the list are a string of critically-praised titles. These include the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series, Republic Commando, and the Jedi Knight titles.
